Economic Empowerment Program for Batik-Craftmen at Imogiri-Bantul, Yogyakarta

The earthquake that hit Jogyakarta and Center Java, has given bad impacts as lost of productive assests and economic opportunities for business actors, some of them lived in Bantul District and surroundings, especially the ones who has limited capitals.

Until 3 months post-disaster, there were still many of micro business actors who have not started their business back because of lack of assets in the form of capital as well as production tools. One of them is the writing- batik craftmen suround Imogiri.

Goal
To re-develop, re-grow the economic activities, especially the writing-batik craftmen in Bantul
To increase the role of local institution to facilitate the business actors in having easy access to financial, technical supports, marketing products in local, regional as well as international scale.

Achievement

• The craftmen has done some inovations such as natural dyes and diversification of products such as bags and wood crafts.
• Establsihment of Paguyuban Seni Batik Tulis Giriloyo, an organization of writing-batik craftmen.
• This organization now owns a show room to promote the products
• This organization now owns workshops in 3 places as collective production places among the craftmen
• The target beneficiaries are able to participate in regular local, national and international exhibition, for promoting the products
• Giriloyo is set to be a tourism destination of writing-batik. Tourists could also learn how to make batik.
